Water Water // Virtual Water Exhibition

When briefed to design an exhibition based on water, the subject of ‘virtual water’ (the amount of water that is embedded in food or other products needed for its production) was an interesting concept to focus on. The free-standing contained exhibition was set out so that the journey around the space is defined, taking you around a ‘dry’ contrasting area at its heart; a space that you can see into, but can’t get to until you get to the end of the experience. To express the Virtual Water concept comparisons of volume were used to stress the large volumes of water used. For example, visitors walk into a tower that was sized so that it’s volume was the amount of water used to produce a bag of rice. In open areas the route was implied by resin set in the floor containing recycled plastic bottles to give the suggestion of water without actually using it.
